Tips on Upcycling Your Sideboard

Is your sideboard starting to look a bit rough and in need of some TLC? One way to save money and get to exercise your artistic license is to upcycle furniture as opposed to buying new. The first step to upcycling should be choosing the new look for your sideboard by considering the colours in the room it will reside, getting some ideas online, getting paint swatches from a local diy retailer and planning your design.

Once you know what you want to create, you will need to prepare the sideboard by sanding it down to remove any varnish, wax, oil or loose/flaked pieces of wood. If there are any holes, they will need to be filled and sanded. You will then need to clean the piece of any dust or dirt before moving on to painting. It is highly recommended to first put on an undercoat to help your final coat of paint, to have a long-lasting finish.

Once the undercoat if thoroughly dry, you can apply your paint. Some colours or paint types may need several coats to attain the colour desired. Once all is dry, you could even attach new knobs for the piece to finish off the new look.
